“Dissemination Seminar on port resilience strategy” was conducted for “Advisory Services for Port Operations and Maintenance Policies in the Pacific Region” (commissioned by JICA).
OCDI, as part of its “Advisory Services for Port Operations and Maintenance Policies in the Pacific Region” (commissioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency), hosted a “Dissemination Seminar on port resilience strategy” in a hybrid format combining in-person and online sessions. The event took place at the Fiji headquarters of the Pacific Community (SPC), which served as the counterpart organization for this project. The seminar was held over two days on June 10 and 11, 2025.
The seminar covered methods for designing port facilities to withstand future sea-level rise and increased cyclone intensity due to climate change, as well as techniques for reinforcing port facilities against earthquakes and tsunamis. In addition, port resilience strategies for each of the target ports in six countries—Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands—were presented by the expert team based on site surveys conducted to assess their vulnerability to natural disasters. Dr. Shibasaki, an Associate Professor from the University of Tokyo, also presented an analysis on the efficiency of international container shipping in the Pacific Island countries.
The seminar was attended by participants from the six target countries and SPC member states, with over 40 participants engaging in active discussions.
