Launch of “The project for development of Marine and fisheries surveillance infrastructure plan in the republic of Indonesia”
We have launched the “The project for development of Marine and fisheries surveillance infrastructure plan in the republic of Indonesia.”
Indonesia boasts the world’s third-largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This sea area is home to many of the world’s most abundant marine fisheries resources, making Indonesia’s fishing industry the second largest in the world after China.
However, within Indonesia’s resource-rich waters, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (known as IUU fishing), primarily by foreign vessels, is rampant. As annual losses due to IUU fishing are estimated at approximately 3 trillion yen, the Indonesian government recognizes the urgency of introducing measures to combat this issue.
Against this backdrop, a nationwide marine fisheries surveillance infrastructure development plan must be formulated as soon as possible to strengthen IUU fishing surveillance. One of the key objectives of this project is to prioritize the development of two monitoring bases and develop a conceptual design for them.
In September 2025, we began field surveys in collaboration with the Directorate General of Surveillance for Marine and Fisheries Resources (PSDKP), which oversees Indonesia’s marine fisheries surveillance. Going forward, in collaboration with PSDKP and Indonesian organizations related to marine fisheries surveillance, we will compile a marine fisheries surveillance infrastructure facility development plan and proceed with the preliminary design of priority development projects.
