Completion of the FY2026 JICA Port Development and Planning Training Program
The FY2026 KCCP, Sustainable Port Development and Planning (for Port Engineers) Training Program was successfully completed on July 2, 2026. During the 46-day training period, all participants completed the program without a single dropout.
The program period was marked by several unusual events including the formation of three typhoons; notably, JICA Yokohama had to close its facilities when a typhoon was forecast to make landfall in the Kanto region between June 2nd and 3rd.
In addition, at around 7:30 a.m. on June 25, an earthquake measuring a seismic intensity of ‘lower 6’ was recorded in Hachinohe. As the participants were staying overnight near Onahama Port for a field visit at the time, the experience was particularly memorable. Since most participants had never experienced an earthquake before, many were visibly shaken.
A major component of the training program was the preparation of Action Plans. Despite the demanding schedule, the participants worked diligently on their plans, benefiting from the careful guidance and support of the advisors. Many continued refining their presentations until the day before the final session. Their efforts clearly paid off, resulting in Action Plans of high quality. The final two days of the program were devoted to presentations of these Action Plans, and it was impressive to see the participants presenting their work with evident pride and confidence.
This year’s participants were particularly enthusiastic throughout the lectures. They frequently asked insightful questions, often extending discussions beyond the scheduled 90-minute sessions. Their eagerness to learn left a lasting impression. During port visits, they showed equal enthusiasm, carefully taking notes and asking detailed questions about technologies and management practices that could be adapted and applied in their respective ports. Their serious commitment to learning was evident throughout the program.
Having successfully completed the training program, the participants began their journeys home on July 3, each returning to their respective countries with new knowledge, valuable experiences, and practical Action Plans to support the future development of their ports.
